Summary |
A 19th century woman's recollection of her life in Northern Lake Michigan. Elizabeth Whitney Williams' family lived on Beaver Island for several years during the early days of the mid -century settlement of a Mormon group. After being forced to leave by pressures from this group, the family was able to return whenthe religious body was expelled. The author draws upon her early childhood memories and retells tales told to her by many who were affected by "King Strang" and his kingdom of St. James. Mrs. Wiliams eventually became lighthouse keeper at the harbor station of Beaver Island and served many years there before being transferred to a similar post at Little Traverse Bay. |
